construction getting off of there around 4th. typical overnight as well as approaching the golden gate in the northbound direction. also southbound 101 right around cesar chavez, reports of an accident there, one car involved that may be off of the roadway but i see a little slowing there. it looks like it's there another few minutes so we'll track that southbound 10 up with towards 280. back to you guys. >> thank you very much, mike. it is official. round one is in the books and this morning president obama and mitt romney, right now they're just going their separate ways. >> the pressure was on mitt romney to perform, taking on the man even republicans describe as one of the most skilled debaters in politics. tracie potts is in denver this morning with debate highlights. >> reporter: the point of this debate was to make differences clear on lowering the debt. >> you said you'd cut the deficit in half. >> the way we do it is $2.50 for every cut we asked for $1 of

additional revenue paid for, as i indicated earlier, by asking those of us who have done very well in this country to contribute a little bit more to reduce the deficit. >> the president insisted romney would spend $5 trillion on tax breaks favoring the wealthy. >> math, common sense and our history shows us that's not a recipe for job growth. >> everything he just said about my tax plan is inaccurate. >> reporter: they clashed on wall street, whether banks should be too big to fail and medicare. >> cutting $716 million to balance obama care is in my opinion a mistake. >> if you repeal obama care, and i have become fond of this term, obama care, if you repeal it, what happens is those seniors are going to be paying $600 more in prescription care. >> reporter: the fiercest exchange over health care and jobs. >> i just don't know how the president could have come into office facing 23 million out of work, rising unemployment, an

economic crisis at the kitchen table and spent his energy and passion for two years fighting for obama care instead of fighting for jobs for the american people. >> we did work on this alongside working on jobs, because this is part of making sure that middle class families are secure in this country. >> reporter: president obama on defense. romney challenging his record as both now wait to see if this exchange had any impact on voters. it had impact online. on twitter this was the most tweeted event in u.s. plolitica history. tracie potts, nbc news, denver. >> this morning everyone is weighing in on who they think won that debate, that includes a group of political science students who watched the debate in downtown san jose last night. after it was over, even some of the president's biggest supporters in that room felt that romney had a slight edge. >> overall romney in my perspective did a little bit better. he wasn't as specific as obama, but he set out to attack obama more.

>> a political science professor from san jose state says she thinks romney will get a bump in the polls from this debate. coming up at 6:00, we'll take a look at some of those polls and what they're saying about each of the candidates' performance. for continuing coverage from the debate just go to our website, nbcbayarea.com. we have posted the transcripts of that full debate as well as analysis from political experts. next up, the presidevice presidential candidates will square off on october 11th. a deadly night on san jose streets as police investigate two separate homicides. the first one happened around 8:30 near south 2nd and san fernando street. police found a man unconscious on a sidewalk. he may have been involved in a fight. at this point it is not exactly clear how he died. the second homicide happening in east san jose on south jackson

avenue. investigators say somebody shot and killed a man outside of his home. right now we have a live look at that area. police are still on the scene investigating. they say the shooting appears to be gang-related. these homicides mark number 35 and 36 in san jose this year. meantime, a suspect is recovering this morning as police investigate an officer-involved shooting on the caltrain tracks in san jose. police say the man was walking on the tracks yesterday afternoon. when deputies and officers confronted him, police a he would not cooperate and started running after them with a metal spike. a deputy shot the man. >> you know, if an officer believes or his health and safety is in danger or that of his fellow officers and you have a suspect who's actively arming himself, the officer obviously felt threatened and did what he had to do to protect himself. >> the man was taken to valley medical center with

nonlife-threatening injuries. everything is back to normal this morning. we have new details this morning about a fight between neighbors that left two men dead and a 65-year-old man behind bars. vallejo police say they found the two victims dead in a yard on foulkstone way. officers tracked the suspect to a nearby home and say he is 65-year-old markson honniger. he is a u.s. marine and has a u.s. marine flying in front of his house. neighbors say he's known to have a lot of guns. christie smith is gathering the latest information at the scene and will have a live report coming up for us at 5:00. 4:11. gay rights activists in san francisco are planning to demonstrate outside the installation of archbishop salvatore courtoleon. the 56-year-old played a major role defining prop 8. back in august he was arrested

at a dui checkpoint in san diego. today's ceremony will take place at st. mary's cathedral. >> can you believe feel it? the oakland athletics kings of the a.l. west. finishing off the first place rangers 12-5 in that season finale. most experts counted these guys out at the start of the season and the season looked like a lost cause at the midway point, but all good now as the green collars roll into the playoffs. >> i didn't go to the bathroom and i didn't have no beers so i walked the whole game. it was awesome. it was awesome. >> that is totally awesome. the guy has good news, he can take a break during the next game. they start against detroit. game 1 saturday, 3:00 p.m. game 2 on sunday, time to be determined. then the a's back home in oakland for game three.

that one is also to be determined. meantime giants catcher buster posey finishing the regular season with a big-time honor, winning the national league batting title with .336 batting average. he is the first catch tore take that title since 1942. the giants start their postseason run this saturday taking on the cincinnati reds. that game starts 6:30. game two is also at home on sunday. then for game three, they head out to cincinnati on thursday, but big congratulations to buster posey. >> yeah, that's great. i know a fan of the giants, her name is christina loren. >> you got that right. >> how's the forecast looking? >> looking good. in fact i'm going to be working on saturday because we have so much happening in san francisco all in one weekend. fleet week, america's cup, the giants playoffs, taking on the reds, an you're going to get forecasts for all three coming up. we will start with this live picture of san francisco this

morning. a return of the low clouds at 4:39 and it just started. we'll see these clouds continue to thicken up and by about 10:00 a.m., still mostly cloudy at the coast so a much cooler day on tap. look at these numbers, just refreshing. 72 in fremont, 76 in san jose. right around 70 in santa cruz. you'll hit 73 degrees in san rafael so let's get right to the action. america's cup world series live racing on the pay today. look at where your temperatures are going to be, 69 degrees out there at 4:00 p.m., 65 at 5:00 and 63 at 6:00 p.m. another man who's been called into work this weekend, mike. >> looking over here at the city action folks, the earlier accident on 101 at cesar chavez, that just cleared. the slowing has also cleared approaching the scene. typical construction on the san francisco side of the bay

welcome back. how about we give you a live look of san jose. there you go. looks nice out there. we will get a look at the forecast with christina. your time now is 4:45. new this morning, a study out of uc berkeley finds a common chemical in plastic can alter thyroid hormone levels in pregnant women and newborns. bpa is a compound found in hard plastics, and the lining of canned goods. higher exposure was linked to thyroid changes in pregnant women and infants, especially little boys. all the changes were within the normal range, but researchers say it raises concern because the thyroid plays a role in the cognitive development of children and unborn babies. if you're one of the millions that uses facebook, you know it's free. unless you want to pay the social network to promote a picture or announcement. a brand new feature lets you

push a post to the top of your friends' news feed. it costs about $7. it was released to a small group of users yesterday, but businesses have been able to pay facebook to insert sponsored stories into news feeds, but this is the very first time facebook is charging the average user to share information. 4:46. wall street hoping to rebound this morning after a grim forecast from silicon valley tech giant hp. for that and the rest of the news before the bell we turn to jackie at cnbc world headquarters. jackie, good morning. >> good morning to you, marla. well, the futures are modestly higher after stocks eked out small gains yesterday. first we saw investors were cheered on by positive economic data on private sector job growth and the services sector, but that was offset by hp. the company issuing a disappointing earnings forecast. right now the european market there in the red and as i mentioned futures a little

higher here. in the u.s. we'll get data on unemployment. meantime the dow rose 12 points yesterday to 13,494. the nasdaq up 15 points to 3,135. gas prices typically fall after labor day, but if you live on the east or west coast like us, you haven't seen those declines just yet. drivers in california paid $4.23 a gallon on wednesday. that was 45 cents higher than the national average. while prices at the northeast are at or near highs for the year. in the bay area it is near $4.30 per gallon. pipeline problems is driving up prices in states that usually have some of the highest prices in the country anyway. >> don't we know it. thanks so much. 4:47 right now. christina loren joining us.

finally it's going to start feeling like fall. >> and then it's going to feel like winter. you're turning on your heater possibly by this weekend. we've got showers on the way so, yeah, the wacky weather continues. your seven-day forecast is moments away. 4:48. we want to start with a live picture. a beautiful start in san jose. we do have some low clouds. you will see a return of the low clouds all the way to livermore. we'll get a little bit of low cloud cover and that will keep us cool throughout the day today. not just that, our winds have shifted back out of the west carrying in that cool ocean breeze all day long. 58 degrees to start. you don't need the jacket in livermore or concord. you might need it up in santa rosa. here is the change. look at the jetstream taking a significant dip. area of low pressure arrives as we head through the next couple days. we're not expecting any showers out of this system potentially until late saturday into sunday and the best chance will be up

thieves broke into the home late last summer. on monday her south san jose home was hit again. this time thieves not only took jewelry and electronics, they also grabbed her 10-year-old daughter's new puppy, a yorkie mix named miko. this morning that poor little girl has a message for the mean dog nappers. >> if you bring it back, that would mean the world to me, and i would be willing to give anything you could have stolen, anything from my room, but just not my puppy. >> how sweet is she? my goodness. little marissa offering up her piggy bank as a reward, really wants her little dog back. san diego police and fire unions have also chipped in to help get her puppy back. 4:50. after staging a strike that lasted more than a week, teachers in the chicago school districts have overwhelmingly

agreed to a new three-year contract. union leaders announced late last night that 79% of union members approved the deal. last month's strike brought classes to a halt for 350,000 students in the district. teachers suspended their walkout after seven days and returned to classes pending the outcome of the official vote. a piece of history in arizona has dodged the wrecking ball. this home in phoenix was designed and built by framed architect frank lloyd wright in 1952. it was slated to be demolished today but a deal was struck to delay demolition for at least a month. they're hoping to find a buyer who will restore the home. it is valued at almost $2 million and is considered one of the 20 most important frank lloyd wright designs ever built. >> two million bucks and they just want to rip it down. >> are you going to buy it? >> thinking about it.

hi, everybody, happy thursday. it is 4:54. a protester spent a full day atop the day at st. peters basilica has come down from his not-so-smart perch. the italian business owner climbed onto the dome tuesday and held up a banner protesting the italian president and that country's economic reform. he finally agreed to come down last night after government officials agreed to discuss new rules that impact local businesses. i guess he made his point. >> guess so. we'll see if there's anything impacting traffic right now. how's it looking, mike? >> we have major b.a.r.t. delays heading during the pittsburg bay point, dublin station as well as t -- some delays. we'll get a live look outside. we do have highway 17 right near
